Things to think about before the shoot:

  • Why are you having this portrait taken, now?  How are you planning to use these images
  • What do you want the images to say?
  • What is the style of image you are looking for?  (bring examples)
  • What is your favorite feature?  What feature are you self-conscious about?  (bring examples of “good” and/or “bad” pictures taken in the past)
  • What props (including music) would be fun to have on-hand?

What to wear?

  • Is this a picture of you, or of your clothes?  If it's of you, then select clothing and accessories that express the message and style you want to convey. If it’s a picture of your clothes, then lets discuss creating the appropriate “set” for the shot.
  • Wear something you feel comfortable in – if you are uncomfortable, it will show.  Bring several outfits and together we’ll figure out what works...and don’t forget accessories (jewelry, scarves, shoes, hats, handbags) and any other props that could be fun In the shoot.
  •  If you’ll be in a group shot, is the image supposed to emphasize the group or the individuals?  Do you want to blend in or stand out?
  • When in doubt remember, darker colors recede making things appear smaller.  White/light colors draw the eye and makes things appear larger.
  • When it comes to makeup, you’ll probably need more and darker than you think – especially for your eyes and lips which can really fade under the lights.  Bring your makeup - at least your favorite shades of lipstick and eyeliner.

During the session:

  • Think about the mood/emotion/message you want to convey.
  • Focus on your posture.  Stretch your spine.  Lengthen your neck.
  • Don’t try to hide features (that always makes them more noticeable).
  • Smile with your eyes (as Tyra says, "Smize").
  • Dance….Daydream…..Relax and have fun!
